How to Design the Inside of Your New Custom Home

Dotcom Design • Dec 10, 2020

Investing in a brand-new custom home is an excellent way to spend your money. You get the home you want, the design you want, and the features you want all in one package. It is an exciting purchase for the whole family.

But if you are planning on staying in this house for a long time, you have to make it worth it. You should work with your contractor to ensure you are getting precisely what you want, and then work with designers to see how you should design the inside. There are many areas you should direct your attention when designing your new home.

Appliances

One basic thing to keep in mind is what kinds of appliances you want in your home. Appliances generally last a long time, so you may want to consider getting neutral color appliances, so it complements a variety of wall colors. Each corresponding appliance should match for design purposes (think dishwasher and refrigerator).

For example, you may want to get a new oven. Some ovens are colored dark blue inside. If you are planning on going with a lighter color of wall, this would be perfect. Though it may not work for a darker blue tone. Contrast is perfect for designing.

Furniture

Just like your appliances, your furniture should fit in nicely with the vanilla design of the home. Get couches, tables, and chairs that contrast enough with the walls and the floors. You should avoid using too many colors that clash, (such as black and brown) and keep things as simple as possible.

You should also pay attention to what your furniture is made of so you can know what to prepare for in the future. For instance, over time, some wood furniture can change color. While you could easily buy new furniture, you may want to keep this in mind for the long-term.

Area Rugs

An often overlooked piece of interior design is the area rug. While some people probably haven’t thought of the purpose behind rugs, they do several things. First, they can establish certain gathering areas (often called zones) in different rooms. This is especially true if you have two distinct areas in a massive room. They reinforce your design and purpose for the room that your other furniture is showing off.

Aside from designing, there are several practical reasons why you should incorporate rugs into your home’s design. In narrow hallways, they can show a path you can follow. They dull the noise of loud steps and keep the actual floor of the home clean.

Wall Design

Wall design is one of the first things people notice. It establishes the framework from which you design the rest of the room. Choose a color that has broad pairings and appeal. White, gray, black, and dark blue are typically great places to start. Based on your circumstances, you may want to pick something else.

Then you just have to select furniture that complements your wall color. Making your wall color something simple will also make it easier to sell your home if you ever need to. If you are planning on staying in this home for the rest of your life, you may be able to get away with a less common wall coloring.

Lighting and Ceiling

Going even further, the way you choose to light your home is something you should keep in mind. Do you want to emphasize natural light in your home, or do you want shade and curtains everywhere? Both have their own advantages. Natural light can make homes less energy efficient, but relying exclusively on artificial light can feel too dark. Find the balance for your family.

You might want to include different ceiling ornaments as well. High-class chandeliers can be pricey but gorgeous. If you want a more rustic looking home, wood beams can be used to enhance a room’s design as well. It just depends on what you want.

Bathroom

You may want to look at designing your bathroom in a more effective way. Adding a room where the toilet is separate is a good way to keep your bathtub and shower experience less smelly. Adding natural light areas is usually a smart idea. There are also a variety of luxury features you can add to your bathroom.

Design your bathroom with your morning routine in mind. Add a walk-in closet near the shower to help you pick out your clothes right after you clean up. You can then walk out and work on your hair, shaving, and dental hygiene. Creating a streamlined process in your bathroom is perfect for your designing plans.

Kitchen

A well-designed kitchen should feel similar to your newly planned bathroom. Lay everything out in an intuitive way—pans, glasses, and spices should be close to the appliance you need them for. Some kitchen islands come with drawers for cutting boards and mixing bowls (for easy access). You can also buy spice organizers for quick recipes.

Think about how you want to store food. Where do you want the pantry to go? You should also think about how to store bigger pieces of equipment, like air fryers or mixers. Talk with your contractor and see what kinds of floor plans are most popular.

Hobby Room

Oftentimes, people are so busy thinking about the essential rooms that they forget to include some of the fun ones. Every family should have a hobby room of sorts. Depending on interest, some families get a game room, others create a home theater, and some make a home gym.

Whatever you decide, you should have a space in your house where you can enjoy yourself. Customize your home to what you like and appreciate. That is the whole point of creating this new home.

Keep in mind that design elements such as color, materials, and priorities will be different throughout your life. While it may seem important to focus on the color of your walls and the furniture you have right now, those issues will likely not be important in ten years. Focus on the fundamental aspects of design you will like for the long haul—organization, lighting, and flexibility with the space you have.
