How to Add More Living Space to Your Home

May 03, 2022

Every home needs room to spread out and spend time with family and friends. And if you don’t have enough living space, your home can start to feel a little claustrophobic. If you feel like you need to add more living space into your home, there are a few different directions you can go to get the space you need. Here are a few of those ways, so you can start thinking about how to expand your space.

Add a Story

One great option is to start by building upwards from your current home. Adding space by adding a second story can be a great option because it doesn’t require increasing the actual footprint of your home. That means that you will still have all the yard space that you need. You can add a story over your whole home or just over sections, depending on your needs. Adding an additional story to your house is a pretty big project, so you want to have a plan in place for how you will live in the meantime.

Convert a Space in Your Home

Another option that can be a little easier to manage is to convert a space in your home to function as more living space. The most common way for this to occur is through a basement conversion. Finishing your basement can greatly expand your living area and give your family a little more room to spread out. A finished basement can have a variety of purposes. Take advantage of that and turn it into whatever you’re lacking in the rest of your home!

Update Your Attic

You can also take an existing attic and convert it into an actual living space. Depending on its size, your attic could become a bedroom or a living room or serve another purpose that you have need of. When converting your attic, you want to make sure that you make insulation a priority. Attics tend to be underinsulated, which means that without help they can get too cold in the winter and too hot in the summer months of the year.

When you love your home, you don’t want to leave it for something more spacious. So finding a way to make your existing home feel larger is a great option. The three options above can start you thinking about how you can really grow your space.
