3 Tips for You Before Your Move to Your New Custom Home in Iowa City

Tim Walters • May 22, 2020

So, you’re planning to move to Iowa City. Are you nervous? That’s ok—it’s only natural. Moving is a big deal. Maybe you’ve been there before, maybe you haven’t. This could be your first time living in a strange new place. If that’s the case, you’re going to want to have a good plan in place to make this transition as smooth as possible. As you wait for your new home to be built, here’s what you should be doing to prepare for the big move.

Meet the City

You need to get to know your new home. The city is beautiful and has plenty of sights to see. If you’re into sports, check out the happenings at the Carver-Hawkeye Arena or the Nile Kinnick Stadium. If you prefer art, then you can’t miss The Englert Theatre. It’s over 100 years old and is one of the premier performing art centers in the Midwest.

Aside from the sights, there are some other things you’ll want to investigate. If you are a member of a bank that doesn’t have a presence in Iowa City, you may wish to find a new bank closer to your new home. If you have children, you’ll want to learn more about the schools that your children will be attending.

Know What to Keep

Moving your possessions from place to place can be pretty expensive. As such, you should only take items that are worth it. You will need to start on your checklist early to make sure moving out goes smoothly. Start by going through your home and deciding what would be cheaper to buy in Iowa and what would be better to move. While you’re going through your belongings, you should keep in mind how often you use certain items. For example, if you haven’t used something in years, then you may want to get rid of it, no matter the cost. If you aren’t using something, it’s junk, no matter the worth. Either use it or sell it. Otherwise it will just make your beautiful new home feel crowded.

Make Friends

Moving to a new place can be lonely. It’s nice that modern technology will allow you to easily stay in touch with old friends, but that can’t take the place of having friends nearby. Visit the area around your home. Knock on a few doors and introduce yourself. This will give you a good idea of what your neighbors are like. If there are community groups that you are interested in joining, reach out to the leaders and see what opportunities there are for involvement. This will help make your transition a lot easier.

You’re nearly there. It’s time to be excited. Don’t get so overwhelmed with all the things going on that you can’t enjoy this exciting time. After all, you only get one life, so you should enjoy it to the best of your ability.
